The Bonfire Problem

What it was like to feel other people's emotions before I had a word for it

I would be staying the night at a friend's place, and somewhere down the hall two adults would be having the kind of argument people conduct in low voices so the kids don't hear. The words rarely carried. I knew anyway, and at seven I had no account of how, because whatever I was getting hadn't come through the words at all. It reached me the way heat reaches you from a bonfire before you're close enough to see the logs. We would be playing Mario 3 on the NES when it started. I'd tell his parents I felt sick, because that was the reason I had, and they were good about it every time. Then I would call my own house at eleven at night and ask somebody to come and get me.

The drive home was shame. They would ask if everything was all right and I would say yes, which was true. Then they would ask what had made me want to leave, and I could never get there. The closest I could manage was that I didn't feel comfortable in the house anymore. I felt terrible about the hour, every time, and I made the call anyway. My friends never really understood it, and they didn't hold it against me either, which I notice more now than I did then. They seemed to file it under things I did. Plenty of nights I stayed until morning without any of this happening. Other times I was standing by the phone again. It happened at several houses.

The part I could have described at the time was only the asking. It took years to arrive at the sentence I'd use now, which is that houses have a temperature that has nothing to do with the thermostat. Being the strange kid was at least a problem I had words for, so that became the thing I complained about, and my friend was harder to explain. He was sitting in front of that screen in the house I could barely stay inside, completely fine, and watching him left two explanations. Either everybody else was pretending, or something was wrong with me. At seven you pick the second, and then you carry it.

I'm forty now, and I've spent the better part of a decade reading about what that was. Most books on the subject sell a program or promise that the sensitivity is a gift. This one does neither. Some of what I found took things away from me.

The least glamorous explanation turned out to be the best one. Children track the mood between the adults around them constantly, and it works as a safety instrument rather than curiosity. When the reading comes back bad, everything else shuts down so the watching can take over (Davies & Cummings, 1994). That isn't a disorder, and none of it needs a special category for whatever I was doing. What differs from one child to the next is how hard the body reacts: put two of them in a hallway during the same argument, and the one whose heart is pounding is likelier to be the one still carrying it years later (El-Sheikh, Keller & Erath, 2007). The transmission needs nothing exotic either. People mirror the faces and postures around them without deciding to, and the feedback from doing it drags their own state toward whoever they're copying (Hatfield, Cacioppo & Rapson, 1993). What I still can't account for is why the same hallway seemed to reach further into me than into the friend sitting beside me.

The story I told myself through my thirties was that the boy in the hallway had grown into a man who reads people well. I believed it for a decade. Researchers have tested more than twenty-four thousand people on whether they can spot a lie, and the average score was fifty-four percent. A coin flip gets you fifty. The review found little evidence for the stable class of unusually accurate readers I had imagined myself belonging to (Bond & DePaulo, 2006). Faces don't work the way I assumed either. The same expression can mean one thing on me and something else on you (Barrett et al., 2019). That cuts both ways, and I haven't decided how I feel about it.

For years I called the thing I react to lying, because that was the nearest word available. Ordinary lies turn out to be easy for me to sit with. The hard moments are the ones where a face, a voice, and whatever is underneath both seem to be reporting three different states at once. When that happens an alarm goes off out of all proportion to the stakes, which are usually nothing, since managing yourself in public is among the most ordinary things a person does. Somebody named the trap in 1956: two messages arriving together that contradict each other, with no permission to say so and no way out of the room (Bateson, Jackson, Haley & Weakland, 1956). The grand theory built on top of that later failed, and its failure isn't my point. The point is that you can't tell a nine-year-old friend his face and his voice disagree. After enough years of holding an observation you can't say out loud, the obvious explanation is that you are the problem, since nobody else in the room is reacting.

I get a clearer reading from smell than from sight, and it's sharpest from the crown of a person's head. I noticed it first with the people closest to me and then couldn't stop noticing, and for twenty years I assumed I'd invented it. What I found later made the observation seem less impossible without confirming the specific thing I thought I was noticing. Researchers collected sweat from frightened volunteers and had strangers sniff it. The strangers reported smelling nothing, and their faces went afraid anyway (de Groot et al., 2012). The effect is small and picky: it showed up on expressions that were ambiguous, and did nothing when the face was easy to read (Zhou & Chen, 2009). I was tempted to run that straight into a claim about people who manage what they show. The study doesn't establish that. It gives me a reason to think smell might matter more when a face is telling you less.

Hexadecanal nearly knocked me over. Human bodies give it off, you can't smell it, babies' heads are covered in it, and breathing it in changes how aggressive adults get, in one direction for men and the opposite for women (Mishor et al., 2021). I read that paper and sat in my chair a long while afterward. Then I wrote down what it doesn't show. Nobody has tested whether an adult scalp carries more emotional information than anywhere else on a body. The literature on emotional smell samples the armpit, and the scalp result concerns aggression and infants, not a friend's mood at dinner. Three attempts to reproduce the effect on reading faces failed, one of them a close replication of the original procedure (Gomes, Pause, Smeets & Semin, 2023). So: a real channel, a small effect, a contested literature, and the part I care about most has never been looked at.

What helped was not trying to turn the sensitivity down. My attempts usually left me overwhelmed and numb at the same time. Sharing what another person feels is one state. Caring about them is a separate state, and the costs differ. When researchers trained people to soak up what others were going through, the trainees came out feeling worse, and when the same group was taught compassion instead the effect reversed (Klimecki, Leiberg, Ricard & Singer, 2014). I didn't know that distinction existed until my late thirties, which is a long time to run the first program without knowing there's a second.

The other thing that helped was Gross's model of emotion regulation. There are five places to catch a feeling, and four of them come before it has fully landed: choose the situation, change it, move your attention, reread what it means, and only at the last, wrestle the response itself (Gross, 1998). I had spent most of my effort on the fifth, trying to suppress the thing after it arrived. The framework gave me four earlier places to work, and leaving certain rooms became one of them. In practice I decline particular gatherings, leave others early on purpose rather than heroically, and don't schedule anything difficult after a day of hard conversations. It looks like avoidance from the outside. It buys me the evening.

The framework people keep handing me is the highly sensitive person: the orchid among the dandelions, the special twenty percent. Even the researchers behind it admit the questionnaire doesn't measure what it claims to, that results shift depending on who you ask, and that nobody can cleanly separate the trait from ordinary anxiety. The woman who came up with the idea signed her name to those admissions (Greven et al., 2019). Empath isn't a scientific category at all. Underneath the branding there's a smaller finding I've come to trust more. Some more reactive people appear to be moved further by their environment in both directions: worse outcomes in adverse conditions, better ones where the setting is supportive (Belsky & Pluess, 2009).

That framework changed what I think may have happened to me, at the level of mechanism rather than mood. The rooms available to a seven-year-old aren't his to choose, and whichever one I was standing in was going to carry me a long way. That is a different sentence from the one I carried for thirty years. It isn't that the instrument was faulty. It's that it was always going to register whatever room I was put in, and nobody thought to ask which room I was in. I can confirm the upside from the inside, for whatever a single case is worth. Quiet mornings do more for me than they appear to do for other people, and music lands harder.

For most of four decades I assumed the setting was wrong. It isn't wrong, it's wide, and wide is a different problem and an easier one to live with, though it took me until my mid-thirties to get there, and I still can't tell you why the boy in the hallway was the only one in the house reacting.

The top of the head remains unexplained. I've learned enough to stop calling the experience impossible. My explanation is still not something I'd call true.
