A new layer on the evidence maps

The consensus-provenance layer

One of the show's own hosts handed me a sharp methodology challenge, and the moment I read it I knew it was right. I had a slot in my status key labeled "refuted" that I was quietly using for two very different things: claims the evidence actively contradicts, and claims that are merely unsupported, a working assumption nobody has shown is false. Those are not the same thing, and collapsing them is the exact move a careful person should never make.

A working assumption is not a disproof. So I stopped writing it as one.

The change

One status became two, and two new lenses opened

The challenge was specific. One of the show's own hosts flagged that the anisotropy maps of the CMB get treated as the proof of cosmic origin, and pressed me on whether the satellite design objections were ever actually answered. I am keeping the name off the page out of respect, but I want the weight of it understood: this came from inside the show I cover, from someone with the standing to know. It caught me being sloppy in a way that matters, so I went and fixed it.

Refuted

The evidence actively runs against the claim. Something was measured, computed, or documented that contradicts it. A point-like electron where a torus was claimed. A canal chronology that puts the canal in the wrong century. An etymology that runs the opposite direction. Red now means broken, and only broken.

Unsupported, or a functional assumption

The claim is speculative, rests on free parameters, or simply has no evidence for it yet, but nobody has actually disproven it either. "Pointed away from" is not the same as "ruled out." Amber holds that distinction so I never again let a missing study read as a verdict against the idea.

How the consensus was won

For the load-bearing claims, a one-line account of what the mainstream actually rests on. Not "experts agree," but the specific measurements, datasets, and cross-checks that did the work. It separates a position earned by evidence from a position held by habit.

What would overturn it

The specific result that would change my grade. A real falsifier, stated plainly. If I cannot name one, that is itself a finding, and the claim probably belongs in amber or in the interpretive gray, not in green.

Worked example one

The cosmic origin of the CMB, and its anisotropy maps

The cosmic microwave background, the relic glow of the early universe, plus the temperature maps people point to as the proof.

Settled

The CMB is of cosmic origin.

How the consensus was won It is overdetermined by four independent lines of evidence. A 50-parts-per-million blackbody spectrum from COBE/FIRAS, a CMB measured hotter at high redshift exactly as T0(1+z) predicts, gravitational lensing of the CMB at 40 sigma, and a cross-correlation with the low-redshift galaxies the photons physically passed through. No terrestrial or local-emission model reproduces even one of these.

What would overturn it A reproducible high-redshift CMB temperature inconsistent with T0(1+z), or a well-characterized non-blackbody distortion in the monopole attributable to a known local emitter that better explains the 2.7 K signal. None exists.

Overstated

The anisotropy maps alone are the proof of cosmic origin.

How the consensus was won The maps are powerful corroboration, but they are not the load-bearing proof. The proof is the spectrum: the blackbody perfection, the T(z) scaling, and lensing plus the integrated Sachs-Wolfe correlation. The phrasing 'the maps are widely accepted as proof' targets the weakest version of the consensus. The strongest version does not rest on the maps at all.

What would overturn it Nothing about the maps could overturn cosmic origin, because cosmic origin does not rest on them. This row is graded on the framing, not the physics: it overstates what the maps carry.

Functional assumption

The six LambdaCDM parameter values fit to the maps are uniquely correct.

How the consensus was won Planck did not measure six numbers. It measured a power spectrum, and under the LambdaCDM model that spectrum is best fit by six values. The fit is statistically excellent across more than a billion pixels, which is real and strong. But the standing rests on the quality of the fit under an assumed model, not on the values being model-independent measurements.

What would overturn it The Hubble tension, the A_lens anomaly, and the quasar-count dipole are all live. A systematics-clean confirmation of the dipole excess, or an independent measurement that the parameters cannot reconcile, would move this. That is exactly why it is amber, not green: an excellent fit is not a proof of uniqueness.

Granted, then answered

The satellite design objections to the maps were never answered.

How the consensus was won I will grant the true half out loud: there is no formal, point-by-point journal rebuttal from the mission teams to the sharpest design and data-processing critiques, the radiological analyses of WMAP and Planck. No one sat down and answered them line by line, and it is fair to flag that. But the physics is answered anyway, by evidence those critiques do not engage. The same spectrum and maps are recovered by independently designed instruments, COBE, WMAP, and Planck, plus ground and balloon experiments, so no single satellite's design can be the artifact. And the strongest version of the objection made a falsifiable prediction, that an absolute reading at the L2 point would show the 2.7 K signal is terrestrial. It was testable. It did not hold.

What would overturn it An instrument-independent failure to reproduce the spectrum or the maps once systematics are controlled: an L2 mission and an independent ground experiment converging on different, irreconcilable results. That would move this straight back to open.

Worked example two

Bronze Age copper, and the Great Lakes hypothesis

Where the copper in Bronze Age Europe actually came from, and the fringe claim that it was mined in the Upper Great Lakes and shipped across the Atlantic.

Settled, with method caveats

Old World sources supplied Bronze Age copper.

How the consensus was won Lead-isotope analysis combined with trace-element data, against the Oxford reference database, ties Late Bronze Age oxhide ingots to a single mining region in northern Cyprus, and resolves broader copper as a multi-source picture across the Alps, Iberia, Sardinia, Wales, and Cyprus. A 337-artifact Bayesian study finds most artifacts are mixtures dominated by the Atlantic complex.

What would overturn it The honest caveat is that isotope source fields overlap and most artifacts are mixtures, so attributions rest on mixing models with free parameters. A re-analysis that broke the oxhide-to-Cyprus match, or showed the mixing models are not identifiable, would weaken it.

Unsupported, not refuted

Great Lakes copper supplied Bronze Age Europe.

How the consensus was won This is the heart of why the layer exists. The Old Copper Complex is independently explained as an indigenous North American tradition, one of the world's oldest. Trace-element work already separates Great Lakes native copper (lower tin, arsenic, gold, and especially cobalt) from European artifacts, and Lake Superior native copper now has a lead-isotope characterization (Peterson 2024). Every available signature points away from a transatlantic source.

What would overturn it A lead-isotope and trace-element match between a securely dated European Bronze Age artifact and the Lake Superior field, reproduced and published. It has not been done. And because no single decisive artifact-by-artifact mismatch study has been published either, calling this 'refuted' would overclaim. The careful grade is 'pointed away from,' which is exactly amber, not red.

What I do not know yet, and would chase with you

The honest grades above leave real doors open. These are the two I most want to walk through, and they are exactly what this project is for.

Why this is the honest version

The whole game here is maximum wonder, zero hand-waving. A category that quietly merges "we disproved this" with "nobody has checked yet" hands wonder a free pass and calls it rigor. Splitting them costs me a tidier-looking key and buys back something worth more: when I tell you a claim is refuted, you can trust that it actually broke. And when I tell you it is unsupported, you know there is still a door open, and exactly which test would close it.

For the record on how this gets made: I point a hard research stack at every claim, models and all, then I chase the primary sources down and cross every t myself before a grade goes up. The legwork is shared. The judgment is mine. That is the only way I will put my name on a verdict.

And nothing here is sacred, not even the green. "Settled" means overdetermined by the evidence we have today, not true for all time. Every status on every map is an open invitation: bring me the result that should move it, and I will move it, in public, with my name on the change. I am not here to defend a position.
