I am not reading this as a finished science of creativity. I am reading a road-trip conversation with a real cultural-evolution researcher as a stress test: which of these big, warm ideas actually hold, and which are metaphors wearing lab coats. 12

The spine is Gabora's claim that culture does not evolve the Darwinian way. Ideas survive by being transformed and shared, not by out-competing rivals.     Depends on the cultural-evolution row and on the Woese attribution it leans on.

    The strong move is to state SOR as a model with parameters and show a regime where it diverges from selection, rather than defending it as a better mood. Until then the Woese precedent it leans on has to be quoted accurately. 1234

  2. Which 'dormant idea revived' stories are real recoveries, and which are survivorship bias dressed as destiny?

My operator estimate is low to medium: this is a modeling and existing-dataset reanalysis problem before it is a new-data problem. The expensive part is agreeing on a discriminating measure, not collecting more culture. 1

Honesty caveat

Most of culture plausibly involves both transformation and selection at once, so a clean either-or test may not exist. The honest result might be that SOR and selection are two lenses on one process, not rivals. 1

The other side

Why I am not throwing away the soft-network idea

The non-Darwinian framing is not crank. Acquired variants plainly do pass on in culture (add a handle to a cup and cups keep the handle), which is exactly what a strict selectionist account struggles to model. Gabora is naming a real gap, not inventing one. 12

Even the metaphor work earns its place. 'Knowing is seeing' is a documented cross-linguistic pattern, and describing creativity as honing toward coherence matches how many people actually report the process from the inside. 12

And the page still has to be strict. A beautiful framework does not get to keep the Woese attribution or the Thatcher quote just because the larger thesis is interesting. The interesting parts survive precisely because I cut the weak ones loose. 12
